Opposition Jumhoory Party (JP) has refused to sign the voters list of the upcoming Local Council Elections scheduled for May 6 while main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) also expressed concerns over the list.

According to an official of JP, the Elections Commission gave three lists to the party which differed from each other.

“One list had the voters' names, ID number and photo as well. The other list had ID only while the third list had only namesn” said the official.

He noted that the lists provided should all be the same and there should be a reason for the discrepancies.

“That’s why we refused to sign the list,” he added.

Meanwhile MDP has said that the list provided to them does not include any ID card numbers. Therefore they do not accept the list as a valid one.

According to the secretary general of MDP, the Supreme Court’s guidelines on elections mentions that voters list should be publicized with the voter’s name, address and ID number. Hence he declared the provided lists invalid.
