India’s budget carrier GoAir has filed for bankruptcy, while subsequently bringing an end to its flight operations to the Maldives.

The airline’s website had also confirmed its flights will remain temporarily suspended until Friday, June 9 while it had stopped selling fares earlier in May.

The airline stopped its direct flight operations to the Maldives earlier in April, according to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). The airline operated direct flights connecting Maldives capital with major India cities including New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore.

After the airline halted its operations, direct flight routes between the Maldives and India is temporarily halted.

Following its failure to meet debt obligations amounting to USD 800 million, GoAir filed for bankruptcy protection. Despite this, the airline has expressed its commitment to resume operations once it addresses its financial challenges.

The Indian budget carrier first launched its operations to the Maldives in 2005. At the time of its regional expansion to the Maldives, the airline was already operating to 26 domestic and 7 international destinations.
