Maldives female volleyball team competes in CAVA Cup in Nepal

The Maldives national female volleyball team on Saturday evening, May 20, left for Nepal to participate in Central Asian Volleyball Association’s (CAVA) Female Volleyball Challenge Cup 2023.

A total of eight international teams, including the Maldives, will be participating in the event held in Kathmandu. The event which began will continue until the following Monday, May 29.

The participating teams have been divided into two groups. The Maldives is placed in Group B along with Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, and Kazakhstan. The tournament's host Nepal, along with Kyrgyzstan, Bangladesh, and India, is placed in Group A.

Maldives’ first game in the tournament scheduled on Monday, May 22 will be played against Kazakhstan. The following evening, they will face Uzbekistan, and they will conclude their group stage matches against Sri Lanka.

The winners and runners-up from each group will advance to the semi-finals, scheduled for May 26. The teams that do not make it to the semi-finals will compete against each other in ranking matches. The losing teams from the semi-finals will play a third-place selection game the following evening.

Meanwhile, the manager of the Maldives national team Abdulla Rasheed said they are aiming to secure a spot in the finals.

To prepare for the tournament, the team has been undergoing training under the guidance of a veteran coach from Thailand since April.

While the female national team is set to represent the Maldives at the CAVA Challenge Cup, the team secured a silver medal under the guidance of Ibrahim Nizar at the Invitational Four Nations Championship earlier in 2023.
