The Maldives national paralympic badminton team will be taking part in the International Para-Badminton Tournament scheduled from May 9 to 14 in Thailand.

A total of 347 athletes from 37 countries, including four players from the Maldives, will participate in the tournament.

The Maldives paralympic badminton team includes two male players from ‘Standing Leg’ category and two female players from ‘Short Height’ category. The team include Abdul Latheef Mohamed, Ahmed Fayaz, Eashal Riyaz, and Aishath Nazaha.

All four athletes will participate in both singles and doubles events, while the team is coached by Ahmed Iyad, the National Development Officer of Maldives Badminton Association.

While this is the debut international performance for Nazaha, the remaining three athletes have competed in various international tournaments previously.

Eashal was the first to secure a win for the Maldives in the badminton event at the 2021 Asian Youth Para-Games, and competed in the Faza Dubai Badminton Champion held in UAE. Latheef and Fayaz had competed and advanced to the Round of 16 at two previous Faza Dubai Badminton Championships.

The Maldives is aiming to qualify for the Paralympics Games scheduled for 2024 in France, for which player scores will be counted from the Thailand event.
