Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) ousted its leader, Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, from the party late Monday.

The five members of PPM’s disciplinary committee unanimously agreed to terminate the founder of the ruling party after probing the case of Maumoon working jointly with opposition political leaders.

The committee had issued a summons for the former president to be held accountable and present his defence, warning that a verdict will be reached regardless of his absence should he not oblige.

The resolution submitted to the disciplinary committee highlighted several points against Former President Maumoon, most notably:

Working with the opposition to promote their principles

Violating PPM’s charter on social media and other platforms

Spreading false information on the government’s development projects to the public

Working to evoke hatred for the government and PPM

Signing pacts with the opposition on behalf of PPM without permission from the ruling party’s council

However, Former President Maumoon has refused to recognise the decision of PPM’s council, which he had declared in a tweet as having “no legal standing & cannot dismiss members from PPM."
