Narcotic substances with an estimated street value of over MVR 900,000 that were smuggled via post have been seized by the Maldives Customs Service.
According to a statement issued by the customs service on Sunday, the drugs were found last Tuesday while inspecting packages shipped to the Maldives via post.
The package containing the drugs was shipped from the United Kingdom and weighed about 520 grams, the statement said.
The substance found in the package tested positive for mephedrone, a type of amphetamine.
"The package has now been handed over to the Maldives Police Service for further investigation," the customs service said.
Attempts to smuggle drugs into the Maldives through the mail have become a common practice. The customs service has seized several packages containing various kinds of drugs over the past few years.
