The Ministry of Education has launched an investigation into a regulatory violation at Laamu atoll Isdhoo Kalaidhoo School, where three grade 10 students were punished for leaving during school hours.
As a disciplinary action, the students were made to write a promise on a piece of paper that they would not leave during school hours in the future and were made to stand on the assembly stage for two hours in front of all students in the school.
Parents have expressed their discontent with the situation, saying that the school principal was present at the time of the incident but ignored the situation.
A media official from the Education Ministry said that the punishment violated the ministry's policies and that an investigation is underway.
The school has not yet commented on the issue.
According to the island's council, the principal of the school was replaced yesterday, and a new principal was appointed. However, it is unclear whether the transfer was related to the incident or for some other reason.
