Two delegates on behalf of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih met with Jumhooree Party (JP) leader and Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim at his Sun Island Resort yesterday.
A photo of the meeting between Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) Parliamentary Group Leader and North Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Aslam and Hulhumalé MP Ali Niyaz circulated on social media.
However, the details of the meeting were not divulged.
Reportedly, MDP's President and Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed is also attempting to secure the support of Qasim for the upcoming presidential election. Nasheed's team met with Qasim recently.
A source close to President Solih alleged that Nasheed is seeking to dissolve the government coalition prior to the election. Additionally, there are allegations that the Nasheed team is pressuring Qasim to contest the election.
President Solih aims to win the first round of the presidential election in a coalition with other parties. As a result, neither the President nor his campaign teams have discussed the possibility of a second round.
Qasim has yet to make a decision about his involvement in this year's September 9 presidential election. More information will be available after the Jumhooree Party (JP) congress on February 24 and 25.
