Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar has revealed that the council will open applications for land plots in four districts of Addu City.

Nizar told Mihaaru that applications will open this Thursday for land plots in Hithadhoo, Feydhoo, Hulhudhoo, and Meedhoo.

The council has allocated 100 land plots from Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo, 350 land plots from the reclaimed area of Feydhoo, and 400 land plots from Hithadhoo, for Addu residents.

The Mayor said the majority of the reclaimed area in Feydhoo will be used as an industrial zone.

"I think we’ll get about 800-900 applications immediately for Feydhoo—but we’re already facing land scarcity there," Nizar said.

Nizar said that the council had to bring changes to the land use plan of Hithadhoo to allocate new land plots from this district. "Right now, we can only allocate the available spaces in Hithadhoo, but if we reclaim more areas, we’ll be able to provide another 2,000 to 3,000 land plots," he said.

During President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s recent visit to Addu City, there was a repeated request from the citizens to provide more residential land in the city. Solih, in public meetings held later, said that he was discussing with the Addu City Council how to accommodate their request.

The government already has plans to reclaim more land in the Maldives’ southernmost city. Nizar said that 90 hectares of land from Hithadhoo and 76 hectares from Maradhoo will be reclaimed soon. Land reclamation in Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo will also be handed over to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), he added.

Speaking at Solih’s campaign rally in Feydhoo last Friday, the Addu City Mayor revealed that the government plans to reclaim an additional 198 hectares of land in Addu. Nizar said that the MTCC dredger ‘Mahaa Jarraafu’ will be docked in Addu by June for this reclamation project.
