A woman died of swine flu late Wednesday, marking the second death in the current epidemic in the Maldives.

Mihaaru understands that Fathimath Ismail, 51, of Faafu atoll Nilandhoo island died while undergoing treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in capital Male. The hospital is yet to make any official statements on the matter.

According to a family member of Fathimath, she had been transferred from Nilandhoo to Male due to sudden high fever and severe body ache.

“She passed away while on the ventilator. It’s been four days since she was admitted to the hospital,” said a relative.

Fathimath is the second person to pass away from the swine flu epidemic currently in the Maldives. The first was a young man aged 24 who died earlier this month in IGMH.

IGMH and privately run ADK Hospital have established flu clinics to treat and control the spread of swine flu while the government has closed down all schools and universities temporarily.
