President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom proclaimed that the Maldives can become an exemplary nation in empowering and providing equal opportunities for women.

Addressing the official ceremony to celebrate International Women’s Day, President Yameen praised the role of women in national development and emphasized that female contribution can be enhanced more in the society from various sectors.

Declaring that the Maldives can play an exemplary role in empowering women, the president stated that positive changes can be witnessed when women are given decision-making level posts.

Admiring the household responsibilities taken care by women, he stressed that more opportunities of various natures need to be opened for them.

Shedding light into the history of the Maldives, he also highlighted the service of the first President of the Maldives, Mohamed Ameen, who opened the doors for women to receive education and serve the nation outside of homes.

The president also urged to stop the obstructions facing women in society and proclaimed that such challenges cannot be prevented with only a Subject in the Constitution, but that it requires patience and confidence of men to enable it.
