Ahmed “Kandholhudhoo” Waheed, the prominent local veteran that had long served Raa atoll and the tourism industry of the Maldives, passed away early Wednesday.

He passed away in his home in capital Male at the age of 70. According to his family, they found him dead when he did not turn up for breakfast, though he had appeared to be in good health earlier in the morning.

“He used to get check-ups and saw doctors regularly,” said a family member, stating that Waheed had not been battling a disease.

Waheed had been one of the pioneers involved in opening Kurumba Village, the first tourist resort in the archipelago, and had been employed at Universal Resorts since the first days of Kurumba.

He had been serving in a senior position at Universal and managing a number of his own businesses in the tourism sector at the time of his passing.

Waheed is succeeded by two daughters, three sons and ten grandchildren.
