Former Chairperson of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Maariya Ahmed Didi proclaimed late Tuesday that MDP's win of the Presidential Elections 2008 is attributed to the women at the front lines of the party.

At a special rally held by MDP in a small area of Alimas Carnival in commemoration of International Women’s Day, the lawmaker of Machangolhi North constituency declared that women were the leading force of MDP while the party had worked for reform.

Noting that MDP had the first ever elected female chairperson, Maariya praised the female membership of the main opposition.

During the rally, the newly elected chairperson of MDP Hassan Latheef announced that MDP will provide financial assistance for female candidates of the upcoming Local Council Elections and other political platforms.

“This is a justified priority. Without such an aid, women will face difficulties at such platforms most times,” said Hassan.

Hassan added that though MDP was granted only a small area by the government to hold the rally, it would not hinder the membership of the party or its functioning.

Former Minister of Education and president of the Women’s Committee Shifa Mohamed, and lawmakers of MDP also addressed the rally.
