The procurement of cargo handling vehicles worth MVR 140 million to upgrade the capital Male’s Commercial Harbour was awarded to a Chinese heavy machinery manufacturer on Monday.

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL)’s CEO Abdulla Junaid signed the agreement with China’s SANY Heavy Industry Co., Ltd at a ceremony held at MPL. SANY was represented by Deepak Garg, director and CEO of the company’s Indian branch, SANY Heavy Industry India Pvt Ltd.

Speaking at the ceremony, Junaid stated that the cargo handling vehicles to be procured include ten cranes, two forklift trucks and four empty container handlers. The vehicles are expected to arrive within the next two months.

“It has been around a decade since we last brought quality equipment to the Commercial Harbour,” said Junaid as he noted the current poor conditions of the port.

He elaborated that MPL had directly contacted SANY Heavy Industry, which is included in the world’s Top 5 heavy machine manufacturing firms, for this project to restore the Commercial Harbour. He noted that direct transaction between the two firms would save MVR 100 million for the state.

Meanwhile, CEO Deepak assured that SANY Heavy Industry will acquire the vehicles for the project within the given duration.

In addition to the cargo handling vehicles to be procured, MPL has also acquired five other fork lifts for the harbour, which had arrived late Sunday.
