Over 400 people had tested positive for Covid-19 the past week in Maldives

Health Protection Agency (HPA) disclosed on Monday that 405 people had tested positive for Covid from June 12 to June 18. Two hundred and thirty one of those people were from Male’ while 95 people were from various administrative islands. The remaining 79 people had contracted it from other, unspecified means.

The total number of confirmed Covid cases in Maldives is now at 180,384. Covid fatalities also reached 300 the past week.

HPA’s statistics also show that 17 people required in patient treatment for Covid in that period.

Internal Doctor at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) Mohamed Ali had raised concerns an increase noticed in patients being admitted for other medical reasons testing positive for Covid-19. He said this showed that Covid was increasing within the community.

“People visiting patients in hospitals have to be very careful now. It is best to only visit the hospital when absolutely necessary,” he said.

Even though the cases have increased, no further restrictive measures are being put in place. However, HPA urges everyone to wear masks in public again, even though it is not mandatory.
