The Maldives government has announced plans to develop 30 housing units in Noonu atoll Holhumeedhoo for residents of Holhudhoo of the same atoll.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih addressed the housing difficulties faced by Holhudhoo residents during his speech at the ceremony to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Holhudhoo's Meyna School.

President Solih stated that all basic necessities will be established in Holhumeedhoo upon its development.

Holhumeedhoo can be reached in about three minutes by ferry from Holhudhoo.

Holhumeedhoo was initially declared a part of Holhudhoo during former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's administration in 2002. The decision was formally recognized through a presidential declaration under Nasheed's administration.

Though Holhumeedhoo was recognized as part of Holhudhoo's administrative jurisdiction, the former was not identified as such under the most recent amendments to the Decentralization Act.

According to the latest amendments to the Decentralization Act, Holhumeedhoo is not included under the jurisdiction of Holhudhoo. The law states that, parameters of administrative jurisdiction for islands are 700 meters of the surrounding lagoon from the shore. The distance between Holhudhoo and Holhumeedhoo is 750 meters.

Holhumeedhoo was once again identified under Holhudhoo's administrative jurisdiction during a 2020 presidential declaration under the current administration.

Holhudhoo council initially requested for land plots to develop raw housing which fell in development limbo owing to land scarcity. However, he later requested to provide land for the construction of the flats. The council has since allocated land for the project. "There are about five empty land plots in the entire island which is 9,000 square feet. There is no space for anything," said the council member, who has a population of 2,222.
