The Maldives called upon Israel to withdraw from the illegally occupied lands of Palestine at the United Nations Human Rights Council on Monday.

The remark was made by Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohamed Asim at the High Level Segment of the Human Rights Council.

During his addres,s Minister Asim stressed the need to cultivate and promote a culture of respect and tolerance more than before.

“We call upon Israel to withdraw from the Palestinian and Arab lands that it had occupied illegally since 1967 and to strictly adhere to the Resolutions of the UN Security Council as demanded by international law,” said the minister.

He further urged to cease violence and respect the fundamental human rights of the people affected by war.

Noting that the Maldives has laid several efforts to promote the human rights of citizens, Minister Asim proclaimed that being a small state does not prevent the Maldives from promoting the values and principles that underpin the international human rights mechanisms.

Giving examples of accomplishments, the minister highlighted the provision of free medical care to the entire population, providing free education, ensuring that no child is left behind and caring for the elderly and vulnerable citizens.

Furthermore, Foreign Minister Asim noted that the Maldives has been greatly benefited by its membership in the Human Rights Council and that its close relationship with UN Human Rights Mechanism has helped to consolidate democracy in the island nation.

The Maldives has put forward its candidacy to the Council for the term 2018-2020. It is noteworthy that this is the most competitive council after the UN Security Council.
