Maldives Journalist Association (MJA) has expressed their concern about the danger and fear faced by the journalists of Mihaaru News.
The organization, which works for the protection of journalists, made this statement with regard to the press release of Mihaaru News highlighting the recent case of targeted bullying and defamation of their journalists.
Referring to the statement, MJA said that acts of harassment and intimidation against journalists are not part of the context of freedom of expression constructive criticism.
MJA states that personal attacks leading to threats and intimidation of journalists is unacceptable.
While Mihaaru News has stated that the matter has been shared with law enforcement authorities, MJA has called on the police to take necessary actions after investigating the case.
In the statement Mihaaru News said that social media posts were created regarding some of the articles written in the newspaper in a manner that questioned the facts of the article. The statement also highlighted that these were organized activities carried out to defame and spread hatred towards the newspaper and journalists in front of the public.
Mihaaru News has also stated that the newspaper and its employees work within the boundaries set by regulatory authorities, Mihaaru Editorial Guidelines and code of ethics of journalism.
