State affirms Digital ID Cards by late 2022

The Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Ms. Aminath Shauna affirms the government's initiative of implementing digital identity cards for Maldivians.

According to the minister, the digitalization of the national identity card will be implemented sometime during late 2022.

During a conference held at Alif Ali atoll Ukulhas by the government to discuss challenges in transferring authority to council authorities under a decentralized system, one of the councils that took part in the conference proposed expanding authorities of the council to be able to renew and prepare ID card prints.

The council that proposed the idea had noted on the difficulties faced by locals outside of Greater Male' Region in having to visit the country's capital whenever they required to renew their ID cards.

Meanwhile, all major components related to digitalizing the ID card have been completed as per the minister. Ms. Shauna further attested that the ministry, in cooperation with all relevant authorities and ministries were currently attempting to update the data required for the final implementation.

Locals will have the opportunity to create physical ID cards even after the state commences issuance of digital ID cards.
