Maldives Police Service has begun investigation into a death threat received by lawmaker of Maafannu North constituency Imthiyaz Fahumy.

According to Police, the investigation was commenced late Saturday.

MP Imthiyaz tweeted that the threat was sent as a Viber message. Publicizing the number from which the text was sent, he said that it threatened to stab him to death.

Regarding the threat, several opposition lawmakers have expressed concern, urging not to take the threat lightly and to provide security and protection to MP Imthiyaz.

Lawmakers are given the security of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) upon request.

About a year ago, several lawmakers and journalists also received anonymous death threats. Police service had investigated the matter but never revealed the source of the threats.

It is noteworthy that Imthiyaz Fahmy is one of the most outspoken opposition lawmakers who has been heavily criticizing the government.
