The state has press charges against a speedboat driver over a marine accident which killed two tourists over a year ago.

The speedboat had collided with a diving excursion boat off the coast of Kaafu atoll Maafushi island in December 2015, which had killed a 16 year old Malaysian girl and 42 year old Chinese woman.

The state is prosecuting the speedboat’s driver, Ibrahim Nasir of Faafu atoll Nilandhoo island, with negligence that had resulted in death.

His trials are to commence on Tuesday.

Previously, the state had also prosecuted a quad bike driver with the same charges over an accident where two tourists were killed after the bike crashed into a tree in Kuredu Island Resort in 2009. The driver was eventually acquitted.
