Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) filed a case at the Anti-Corruption Commission against the Managing Director of Fenaka Corparation, Ahmed Shareef, for allegedly abusing his power to influence the upcoming Local Council Elections.

According to the filed case, Shareef has urged MDP candidates to back off from the election and allow PPM candidates to win.

The lawsuit further accuses Shareef of promising jobs for the candidates who withdraw their candidacies from the elections to make way for PPM candidates. MDP also noted that a similar case had occured in the past as well.

Speaking at a campaign rally held in Thaa atoll Thimarafushi island last January, Shareef had said that if MDP candidates are running the elections to seek a job, he is prepared to provide such opportunities for them.

Shareef’s speech had gone viral on social media and incited much criticism.

“Leave four seats of the council to PPM. The four people [who leave those seats] will be given jobs. I mean I would help them personally,” Shareef had said.

Shareef said that independent candidates and opposition candidates are only running for the council out of need for occupation. He had added that these candidates would not be of any help for the betterment of Thimarafushi island.

He had further warned that should PPM not win the majority of the island and atoll councils, structural changes will be brought to government institutions.
