The local staff of Hulhule Island Hotel (HIH) in airport island Hulhule commenced a labour strike late Tuesday over the hotel management's discrimination among employees based on nationalities.

According to a staff of the five star hotel run by Singapore’s SATS and Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL), the staff are calling for the resignation of the management over unsolved complaints filed by the local employees, who declare that they are being discriminated against while the management favours expatriate employees.

“We requested long back to pay at least half of our salaries in US Dollars. The hotel also covers the Remittance Tax of foreigners and so the locals have also requested a salary upsurge."

A local staff said that the strike began around 6 p.m. on Tuesday after HIH's Human Resource Department attempted to coerce a staff to sign a warning document over leaving the hotel without completing working hours.

“We were told to go to the club hall when we went to the Finance Department. Though we are on strike, none of the guests and outsiders will know about it since we're doing it peacefully,” added an employee.

Maldives Police Service is also active in the hotel due to the ongoing strike.

HIH's management has not responded to the issue yet.
