Maldives Police Service, on Monday, confirmed that the body of the 17-year-old stabbed to death in Maamendhoo, Gaafu Alif Atoll, was sent abroad for his post-mortem.

According to police, the juvenile’s autopsy will be conducted at the Medical College Hospital in Trivandrum, India.

Till date, police have arrested a total of five suspects over the stabbing, including three men, aged 18, 23 and 27, arrested under a court order and two local males, aged 18 and 25, taken into shortly after the initial arrests.

As per local media reports, the 17-year-old was attacked and killed over a dispute between two island gangs.

News outlet Mihaaru reported that the juvenile was murdered in the second violent altercation which took place on Maamendhoo last week, in retaliation for a fight in which the minor and his brother had participated in.

Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed stated that further investigation into the matter would be led by the Serious Organised Crime Department of Crime Investigation Command.

The commissioner urged the residents of Maamendhoo to offer full cooperation to the police as they conduct the investigation.
