Maldives sentences drug smuggler to life

The Criminal Court on Tuesday sentenced a man to life and fined him MVR 100,000 for smuggling illegal drugs to Fuvahmulah in the north of Maldives.

The man named Mohamed Manik had smuggled 74 grams of illegal drugs in his boxers from capital Male to Fuvahmulah last year January. He had been arrested at the domestic Fuvahmulah Airport.

The verdict read that Manik had admitted to his charges and hence will face life imprisonment and a fine of MVR 100,000 to be paid within a month.

According to the Drugs Act, offenders that smuggle drugs into the Maldives will be sentenced for life and face penalties between MVR 100,000 to MVR 10 million.
