The High Court reopened an investigation concerning a murder which occurred in Maamendhoo, Gaafu Alif Atoll during 2006.
Mohamed Shihab died following a violent assault perpetrated by a gang in July 2006.
The current proceedings pertain to the appeal of the Criminal Court's 2019 ruling which states that two individuals implicated in the murder could not be convicted.
In 2008, the Criminal Court initially passed a death sentence on four individuals over Shihab's murder, marking the only verdict of capital punishment approved under Maldives' previous constitution.
However, the High Court overturned the ruling and ordered another investigation into Mohamed Shafraz and Ali Masood, both of whom were among those sentenced.
Following the subsequent investigation, the Criminal Court concluded that the two individuals could not be convicted.
