Former deputy leader of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Alhan Fahmy has filed a lawsuit against the Maldives’ electoral watchdog over removing his name from MDP’s registry.

The former lawmaker of Feydhoo Constituency, Alhan was removed from the party registry on request of MDP. The party’s Disciplinary Committee had expelled Alhan from MDP for acting in violation of party interests.

Alhan stated in his case to the Civil Court that the Elections Commission removed his name from MDP’s registry while he is appealing his expulsion at the party’s Appeal Committee. Adding that MDP Disciplinary Committee’s decision to dismiss him violated party regulations, he requested the court to reverse the Elections Commission’s act of removing him from MDP’s registry.

At the first meeting of the Civil Court’s Dispute Resolution division on Sunday, the Elections Commission requested an extension to respond to the case, which was granted.

The Elections Commission had initially delayed removing Alhan’s name from the registry following MDP’s request. The commission had finally followed through in the wake of criticism from the opposition party.

Alhan had also filed a case earlier at the Civil Court to elect a new leader and deputy leader for MDP, declaring that their tenures are long over. The court had eventually thrown out his case, ruling that as Alhan is no longer a member of MDP, he does not hold the authority to question the dates of MDP’s internal elections.
