The bodies of two tourists missing from Meeru Island Resort & Spa in Kaafu atoll after they went swimming were found washed ashore on two nearby islands Saturday.

Police spokesperson disclosed on Sunday that the two tourists were Chinese citizens, a woman, 30 and a man of 34 years. One of them was found at Baros Maldives resort while the other washed ashore on a sandbank close to Thulhagiri Island Resort. The distance between Meeru and the other two resorts are approximately twenty miles.

Police said that the remains have been placed in the mortuary and preparations are underway to return them to their country.

There have been increasing cases of tourists drowning or going missing while out swimming or on diving excursions. The last case was a Canadian tourist that had drowned while out diving by Alif Alif atoll Rasdhoo island.
