Former President Mohamed Nasheed departed for the United States on Thursday to participate in a discussion on climate change.

According to Nasheed’s office, the jailed former president who has been living under asylum in the United Kingdom will take part in the panel discussion on climate change with the former US Vice President Al Gore.

The event scheduled for January 22 will also launch “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power”, the second part of Al Gore’s Academy Award winning documentary “An Inconvenient Truth”.

In addition to An Inconvenient Sequel, this year’s Sundance Film Festival is to screen 13 more documentaries on climate change issues.

Nasheed’s Office stated that several veterans on environment and climate change will participate in the discussion.

Former President Nasheed was jailed for 13 years on terrorism charges over the arbitrary detention of a judge during his administration. He had been allowed to go abroad for medical treatment upon which he sought political asylum in the UK.
