The Anti-Corruption Commission has ruled that there was no corruption involved in renting 21 vehicles for the SAARC Summit that was held in Addu City in 2011.

After reviewing the Auditor General’s report on the expenses for the SAARC Summit held in the Maldives, ACC said the documents prove that the vehicles were rented after a bidding process.

ACC stated that the rate at which the vehicles were rented were higher than general prices. However, Addu City Council had not fixed on a specific rate in doing so. A total sum of MVR 1.4 million was spent on renting the vehicles.

ACC further noted that the price of goods and services inflated according to demand during the time of 2011 SAARC Summit.

The commission added that a certain amount of money was taken in advance for the vehicles. However, the amount was paid after the vehicles were rented.

Moreover, the ACC said that the city council made the rent payment without having proper details of the number of travels the vehicles made, and this event may have had a chance of corruption involved.

However, due to lack of evidence in proving an act of corruption, the matter was decided as corruption free according to the Anti-Corruption Act.
