Authorities retrieve dead body from Male' lagoon

Maldives Police Service, on Tuesday, confirmed the discovery of a dead body in the Southern lagoon surrounding capital city Male'.

A police spokesperson revealed that reports of a body floating in the lagoon were received at approximately 0945 and that the man was taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).

An IGMH spokesperson disclosed that the foreign national over the age of 50 was already dead at the time of transportation to the hospital.

Speaking to local media outlet Mihaaru, Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) identified the deceased as being the Head Project Consultant at Velana International Airport (VIA).

According to the company, the deceased individual was a 58-year-old British national who had worked in Maldives for over three years.

Mihaaru further stated that CCTV cameras in the area show that the MACL employee removed his shoes and bag before diving into the lagoon.

At present, police are yet to reveal additional details concerning the case although they have divulged that authorities are conducting further investigations into the matter.
