Fenaka Corporation Limited, on Tuesday, confirmed to local media Mihaaru, that the company was geared up to shut down the powerhouses in three wards of Gan, Laamu Atoll, and provide electricity to the entire island via a singular network.

The company’s Managing Director Ahmed Saeed told Mihaaru that the preparations were finalised and testing was currently underway to provide electricity from the powerhouse developed in the newly populated Maahinna area, before the end of November.

With the inauguration of this powerhouse, Fenaka will discontinue operations of the powerhouses located in Mukurimagu, Mathimaradhoo and Thundi Avah.

Gan, which is the largest island in Maldives, has a population of over 5,000, distributed among approximately 750 households.

Saeed noted that providing electricity from one remote powerhouse will prevent the general population from being exposed to the toxic fumes of burning fossil fuel, adding that people of the island face difficulties since the three operating powerhouses are close to the residential areas.

Moreover, he highlighted that the noise pollution will be greatly reduced and efficiency will increase, in addition to being able to provide electricity to areas where it was not possible before.

When the singular electricity network is established, Saeed stated that 4.5 megawatts of current will be provided through 11,000 meters of cable.

Fenaka is conducting the project in two phases. The first phase consists of providing electricity to the whole of Gan, and the second phase will involve connecting the network with Fonadhoo of the same atoll.
