Following the Judicial Service Commission (JSC)‘s move to dismiss him, Judge Ibrahim Ali resigned from the Criminal Court early Monday.
JSC placed him under a 60-day suspension last week, requesting Parliament approval for his dismissal.
After tendering his resignation, Ibrahim Ali told local media he made his decision as there was no place to turn to for justice.
Ali claimed that his two-month suspension was imposed in violation of the local council act, but he did not want to oppose JSC’s decision.
He further accused the judicial watchdog of failing judicial reform and ensuring justice.
JSC had moved to dismiss Ali over the judge’s delay in delivering a new verdict in the case of releasing 10 suspects charged with assault by sharp objects, following the High Court’s order to review the Criminal Court’s initial ruling.
According to the commission, Judge Ibrahim Ali had deliberately delayed the case, even when the Prosecutor General’s Office wrote letters requesting expedition.
He had finally announced the verdict after the High Court intervened with a letter demanding action.
JSC also noted that the judge had spoken in a manner which encouraged the suspects receiving charges, on the day of the final verdict, in addition to using phrases which comprehended that he was only remanding the suspects due to the High Court’s order.
Three other cases concerning the same judge were under investigation at JSC as well.
Prior to this, JSC had sought Parliamentary approval to sack multiple judges over allegations of misconduct. However, most of them resigned before the voting took place.
