Maldives Police Service on Thursday publicised the identity of a Maldivian man summoned for investigation over alleged child sexual abuse.
According to the police's notice, the man is Hassan Nizar, aged 59, from the island of Thimarafushi, Thaa Atoll.
Nizar is to present himself to the Thimarafushi Police Station on October 3 at 1000 hrs.
Police issued the public summons and the suspect's details as Nizar's whereabouts are presently unknown.
Amid a significant number of child sexual abuse cases reported this year, public ire continues to soar over the government's meagre record of arresting and convicting perpetrators of sexual offences despite several promises to support the rights of children and women.
After a long wait and multiple protests by the public, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih ratified the third amendment to the Criminal Procedure Code, which finally lists rape and sexual abuse of minors as serious criminal offences, on September 22, 2020.
Meanwhile, the police have warned over increasing incidents of child abuse and exploitation, urging parents and guardians to be aware and report any such cases to the police's Family and Child Protection Wing at +960 3000600 or the Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services at 1412.
