Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) filed a lawsuit at the Civil Court, seeking over MVR 13.2 million of accumulated rent and late fines from a shop leased by the company on the North Harbour of capital Male' City.

According to local media Mihaaru, the 'Shop Number 5' rented by a man named Ibrahim Naif, has failed to pay monthly rent since August 2015.

Mihaaru reported that MPL is pursuing MVR 764,322 in rent and MVR 12.4 million in overdue fees, which is the total accrued amount till February, 2020.

Although the case was filed at the court on February, a hearing is yet to be held.

Naif previously worked for opposition aligned People's National Congress (PNC)'s President Abdul Raheem Abdulla during his campaign elections for Parliament.

MPL is yet to release an official statement over the matter.

For the months of May and June, MPL has reduced the rent for businesses by 30 percent as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent economic recession.
