Former Raa Atoll MP succumbs to COVID-19

Former parliamentary representative for Raa Atoll, Ismail Zakariyya, passed away on Tuesday while receiving treatment for COVID-19, at the age of 79.

Maldives National Defence Force Major Ibrahim Azim, Zakariyya's son, disclosed that the former MP passed way at Dharumavantha Hospital.

After testing positive for the virus on August 13, Zakariyya initially received treatment at Hulhumale' Medical Facility and was transferred to DH11 when his condition worsened.

According to the Health Protection Agency (HPA), the death was the 33rd COVID-19 related fatality in Maldives.

During the 1990s, Zakariyya served two terms as the parliamentary representative of the Raa Atoll constituency. In 2009, he was narrowly defeated in the first parliamentary election held following the enactment of the 2008 Constitution. Zakariyya contested for the constituency of Dhuvaafaru in Raa Atoll.

Having served in the government for a long period, the former MP's last government posting was at the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment.

In addition to Major Azim, prominent footballer Shah Ismail is also one of Zakariyya's sons.
