Civil Service Commission, on Sunday, opened applications for the 'Commissioner of Quality Assurance' post.

The individual designated to the position will be tasked with maintaining the quality of health care, for the first time.

The position was initially introduced under the Health Care Professional Act ratified in 2015. Nevertheless, over the last four years, CSC failed to appoint a Commissioner of Quality Assurance.

According to the CSC’s recent announcement, interested candidates who hold a Masters degree or higher educational qualification in the field of quality assurance, along with a minimum of six years' experience, may apply for the commissioner position. The deadline for applications is September 22.

The post, ranked at the same level as Technical Director-General, offers a monthly income of over MVR 24,000 with salary and allowances.

Given the post has remained vacant for the past four years, the Parliament also recently inquired into the commission’s failure to settle an appointment for the post.

Responding to the Parliament’s probe, the CSC shifted blame to the Ministry of Health, stating they had not requested the commission to hire a Commissioner of Quality Assurance.

Shortly after, the Health Ministry deflected CSC's claim, stating that the Ministry of Finance had not provided the budget to make an appointment for the position.

On August 5, five individuals including health professional filed a complaint with the 19th Parliament’s Committee of Social Affairs, expressing concern over the decline of Maldives’ state-run health facilities.

Failure to fill the vacancy for Commissioner of Quality Assurance was included in the list of concerns, with the individuals also noting that listing the constitutionally mandated position under the civil service could potentially undermine the responsibilities involved.
