Police arrest man over threats against President Solih

Maldives Police Service, on Sunday, revealed that a 47-year-old man was apprehended in connection to threats expressed against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The man was later remanded for a period of 15 days, according to the police.

On Friday, the police launched the investigation into an individual that called for President Solih to be 'burned' or 'set on fire', during a TV programme which was broadcasted live across the nation by Channel 13.

Videos depicting the threatening call are currently in circulation across social media platforms.

The Maldives Broadcasting Commission (BroadCom) also announced an an investigation over Channel 13 allowing the broadcast of violent threats against the president.

Channel 13 has since issued a public apology for its broadcast and asserted that the individual's statements were solely his personal opinions.

Following the incident, several individuals including top government officials have taken to social media to condemn the threats against President Solih as hatespeech and an act of terrorism.
