Male' City Council, on Thursday, prohibited the storage of oil in residential areas of capital Male'.

According to the council, authorities will take measures against companies and persons that violate this guideline.

Prior to this, a guideline gazetted by Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) in 2012, in an attempt to reduce fire incidents, prohibited the supply of oil to residential areas in Male City.

City Council's decision was made in the 105th sitting of the council's third session, less than a week after two blazes were reported in the city's Henveiru Ward.

The bigger blaze of the two burned through two-storey Cafe' Tiolo and spread to the neighbouring Gadhagey Mohamedfulhu Building where State Bank of India (SBI) and Ooredoo Maldives' headquarters are located. Although no persons were injured in the fires, the total damages soar over millions.

The aforementioned fire incidents took place less than a year after Male' City saw its worst blaze in recent years on September 2019, resulting in one death and displacing hundreds.

The repetition of a major fire incident in Male' City reignited several concerns amongst the public, with citizens echoing the need for decentralisation to reduce fire hazards in the congested capital.
