Man, woman sentenced to life for smuggling drugs

The Criminal Court on Monday sentenced a man and woman to life for smuggling drugs into the Maldives with a penalty of MVR 100,000.

Abdul Latheef of Addu atoll Hithadhoo island and Khadheeja Ahmed of Fuvahmulah island were arrested on May 1, 2013 for smuggling drugs in their luggage via a flight of Sri Lankan Airlines.

The Criminal Court’s verdict reads that investigation reports, witness testimonies and supporting evidence prove that both of them had been in possession of 571 grams of Diamorphine.

The court verdict orders the due to pay the penalty within one month as stated in the Constitution.

The Drugs Act state that any drugs found on a person or in possessions or places under the care of a person will be treated as their belonging unless evidence is found stating otherwise. Smuggling drugs into the Maldives carries a lifetime prison sentence and heavy fines.
