The Judicial Service Commission (JSC), on Wednesday, suspended High Court Chief Judge Shujau Usman for a period of two months.

The decision marks the first action taken against Shujau after the judicial watchdog confirmed an investigation concerning the judge in October 2019.

JSC stated that it would publicize further details concerning the decisions finalised during Wednesday's meeting.

The judicial watchdog is currently investigating Shujau for conducting campaign activities ahead of the 2018 presidential election during an unofficial trip to Gemanafushi, Gaafu Alif Atoll.

He also stands accused of bribing a family with the release of an incarcerated relative in return for votes.

The judicial watchdog stated that Shujau was allocated a 7-day period to respond to the points highlighted in the report compiled after the investigation.

During Wednesday's meeting, JSC also suspended Ahmed Shukoor, Chief Magistrate of the Maamendhoo Court in Gaafu Alif Atoll, for two months.

The magistrate faces several allegations, including the conducting of an informal meeting in Villingili, Gaafu Alif Atoll, with a lawyer defending an individual charged in a criminal case filed in April 2018.

Shukoor was also accused of joining a meeting to raise support for a presidential candidate at a house located in Villingili, Gaafu Alif Atoll during September 2018.

Furthermore, during a remand hearing held for a group of individuals arrested on terrorism charges from Kolamaafushi, Gaafu Alif Atoll in August 2018, the magistrate reportedly expressed his intention to continue extending their remands in future hearings.

In August 2018, the magistrate also allegedly expressed political bias in favour of a particular party inside a cafe' in Villingili.

JSC assured that the allegations against Shukoor are currently under investigation and that the magistrate's statement would be collected.
