Attorney General Mohamed Anil late Saturday declared that there are people currently in the nation with information on Ahmed Rilwan, the journalist of Maldives Independent missing for over two years now, and called on such individuals to impart their knowledge to the authorities.

Speaking at the launching of “National Human Rights Framework” and unveiling of the books of laws of the Maldives, AG Anil remarked that the delay in Rilwan’s family reporting his disappearance to the police had caused some challenges to the probe. However, he assured that the investigation to Rilwan’s disappearance is currently one of the largest investigations undertaken by the police.

“I cannot believe that in a small nation like the Maldives, someone could’ve just evaporated without a trace. I’m certain people with that information [on Rilwan] are in the Maldives. No one should allow such a thing to happen to a fellow Maldivian, but we still haven’t reached an answer,” said Anil.

The journalist and blogger had “disappeared” from his flat in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale in the wake of death threats. Over two years on, the investigation has still led nowhere with no information of what had happened to Rilwan, who might have “abducted” him or if he is still alive. Police had earlier arrested two suspects over his disappearance, but they were ultimately released due to lack of evidence.
