Two officials of the United Nations visiting the Maldives met with jailed opposition lawmaker Ahmed Mahloof in prison on Thursday.

The UN officials had initially met with Mahloof’s wife, Nazra Naseem, and his lawyer Nazim Sattar last Tuesday.

Nazra told Mihaaru that Mahloof, who is serving a jail sentence of ten months, has explained his situation in great detail to the UN officials, who have subsequently requested to meet with government officials over his detention.

Meanwhile, the issue of Mahloof’s jail sentence has also been submitted to the UN Working Group while the Commonwealth Secretary General’s Special Envoy to the Maldives, Kenyan Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, has also met with Mahloof.

The independent MP for South Galolhu, who is also the spokesperson for the newly formed Maldives United Opposition (MOU), was first sentenced to four months and 24 days in prison after the Criminal Court found him guilty of obstructing police officers during an opposition protest in April. A week later, he received a further six months for pushing police barricades and entering a restricted area during a protest in March last year.

According to his family, he has been dealing with serious allergy problems, hence doctors had also advised to get treated abroad. Meanwhile he had been treated for skin and eye problems and has also been doing physiotherapy, which the family considers inefficient.

Correctional Service has now granted permission to send Mahloof abroad for medical treatment.
