United Nations (UN)’s official have requested to meet with the jailed lawmaker Ahmed Mahloof, said his wife Nazra Naseem late Wednesday during a meeting with his lawyer and the UN officials.

Nazra told Mihaaru that they shared all the details of Mahloof’s ten month jail sentence so far with the UN officials during the meeting, highlighting his isolation in prison and lack of sufficient treatment for his severe allergy problems.

“They said that they have requested [at Maldives Correctional Service] to meet with Mahloof in jail,” said Nazra as she shed light on the meeting that was initiated by the UN officials.

Meanwhile, the issue of Mahloof’s jail sentence has also been submitted to the UN Working Group while the Commonwealth Secretary General’s Special Envoy to the Maldives, Kenyan Chief Justice Mutunga, has also met with Mahloof.

Correctional Service has now granted permission to send Mahloof abroad for medical treatment.

The independent MP for South Galolhu, who is also the spokesperson for the newly formed Maldives United Opposition (MOU), was first sentenced to four months and 24 days in prison after the Criminal Court found him guilty of obstructing police officers during an opposition protest in April. A week later, he received a further six months for pushing police barricades and entering a restricted area during a protest in March last year.

According to his family, he has been dealing with serious allergy problems, hence doctors had also advised to get treated abroad. Meanwhile he had been treated for skin and eye problems and has also been doing physiotherapy, which the family considers inefficient.

Mahloof has also appealed the lower court’s decision at the High Court. However, the trial has not yet commenced.
