Police Commissioner seeks to detain alleged rapist of 11-year-old until end of trial

Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed, on Saturday, requested the Prosecutor General's Office to order that the suspect alleged to have raped an 11-year-old girl be detained until the end of his trial.

The request was lodged under the law concerning Special Procedures Against Child Sexual Offenders (12/2009). The police commissioner stated that such a request had not been made in five years.

The 38-year-old man was arrested on Friday in connection to the sexual abuse of an 11-year-old at a guesthouse located in the capital city of Male'. The case was initially reported on June 10.

Local media outlet Mihaaru reported that the Criminal Court had remanded the suspect for seven days.

According to the police, the victim has now been transferred to a safe environment and efforts to provide additional assistance in collaboration with relevant authorities are underway.

Authorities have yet to confirm how the perpetrator was able to take the minor to a guesthouse amid the city-wide lockdown implemented in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

A similar incident was reported on May 28, which involved the sexual abuse of a 16-year-old at a guesthouse in Male'. According to the police, the victim was brought from another island by means of blackmail. A 28-year-old has been arrested as part of the ongoing investigation of this case.
