Addu City Council on Sunday announced a six-month moratorium on land rent across the southernmost atoll of Maldives.

In a statement, the city council stated that it will accept requests to defer land lease payments in Addu until June 30.

Lessees are to submit their moratorium requests, as well as requests to delay the works being carried out on their land plots, to the city council via email at [email protected].

A copy of their land lease agreement must be submitted alongside their forms.

Addu City Council has leased various land plots across the atoll for commercial and industrial use, including agriculture, tourism, fisheries, and the development of shops and restaurants.

The city council's decision to defer land rent in Addu comes amid major fiscal and economic repercussions caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has placed many local businesses across the country at risk.
