The Maldives government has awarded flats to doctors and nurses of state-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) under the condition that the flat will be registered under the respective owners' names once the staff completes 10 years of service to IGMH.

The regulation further states that though flat recipients complete their payments, the flats will only be registered in the staff’s name only if he or she completes 10 years of service to the hospital.

If the staff is dismissed from the hospital, the down payment will be returned though their monthly payments to the flat will be considered as rent.

Nevertheless, if the flat owner has to retire from work before completing the 10 years he or she owes to the hospital, the flat will be registered under their name if they have settled the full payment of the flat before the date specified.

In both cases, the hospital's management will check the circumstances before changing the ownership from the state to the nurse or doctor.

The flats were awarded to two medical officers, eight specialist doctors and ten nurses, including staff who have worked in IGMH for a long period of time.

The flats were given from capital Male and reclaimed suburb Hulhumale. The down payment for flats in Male is MVR 400,000 while in Hulhumale the amount is MVR 19,000. The rent of flats in Male costs MVR 17,800 per month for 20 years whereas Hulhumale costs MVR 7,350 for 25 years.

The criteria for awarding flats includes 70 points for quality of service and importance while 20 points were given for the need of shelter and 10 points for financial stability.

Some of the doctors who received the flats include the Cardiologist Dr Ali Shafeeq, Pulmonologist Dr Moosa Hussain, Nephrologist Dr Ibrahim Shiham and Internal Medicine Physician Dr Ali Latheef.

IGMH declared that long serving staffs being awarded flats is a huge achievement for the hospital.
