Maldives, on Thursday, received various medical supplies granted by foreign associates to aid with the country's ongoing COVID-19 response.
According to the Foreign Ministry, supplies include 25 test kits gifted by the Singaporean Temasek Foundation that are capable of conducting up to 5,000 tests.
A total of 200 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) sets were gifted by the Managing Director of Maldives Travel Experts Company Thitithip Thanyakulthip, in addition to another 300 PPE kits sent through.
The aforementioned medical supplies arrived via a Maldivian cargo flight that landed late evening, Thursday.
Foreign Ministry also confirmed that further donations from Singapore were set to arrive during the upcoming week.
Foreign countries are providing assistance in Maldives' COVID-19 response in various ways. Previously, Bangladesh and India provided medical supplies as well as food products. Having donated surgical masks earlier, Chinese enterprises are currently aiding in the establishment of a quarantine facility.
Maldives now records 468 confirmed, 451 active cases of COVID-19 and a total of 17 recoveries. The country recorded its first virus death, an 83-year-old local female, on Wednesday evening.
Following the first confirmed local transmission on April 15, Malé has recorded a significant increase in COVID-19 cases. The city is one of the most densely populated areas in the world.
In addition to the capital, COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Uligan in Haa Alif Atoll, Narudhoo and Milandhoo in Shaviyani Atoll, and Thulusdhoo in Kaafu Atoll.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The new strain of novel coronavirus has infected over 3.3 million people and claimed over 234,703 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than a million people have recovered.
