The Criminal Court on Sunday passed a life sentence on a man convicted of smuggling half a kilogram of drugs via swallowing into the Maldives.

The court passed the life sentence on Ahmed Waheed after he was proven guilty of body packing 90 bullets of drugs, weighing 413 grams, from neighbouring India to the Maldives in February 2013. Police had alleged that Waheed had accomplices at the time though it remains unclear whether they had been prosecuted.

The Criminal Court’s verdict sentences Waheed to jail for life in addition to a penalty of MVR 100,000, which must be paid within a month.

Smuggling of drugs into the Maldives carries a penalty ranging from MVR 100,000 to MVR 10 million.
