Over MVR 15 million of the amount owed to the state have been recovered over the past three years, announced Attorney General Mohamed Anil on Sunday.

Speaking at the press conference held at the President’s Office to impart information regarding the activities planned to celebrate the third anniversary of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s government, Anil claimed that the highest priority of the Attorney General’s Office over the past three years was to recover the money missing from state funds, as stated in the reports prepared by the Audit Office and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), via prosecution. Accordingly, around MVR 15 – 16 million have so far been recovered via various court cases.

“Furthermore, we’re working to file 26 more cases at the courts over the next one and half months or so,” he said without disclosing details on the cases.

The attorney general added that their top priority currently is to recover the MVR 1.2 billion embezzled by Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) from the state via island leases and acquisition costs of islands and lagoons, in the largest corruption scandal to rock the archipelago in history.

The MMPRC corruption case is currently on hold over the delay in releasing ACC’s report on it. Attorney General Anil reiterated that they will file the case at the courts to commence recovering the stolen funds as soon as ACC completes and publicises its report.
